Google Business Profile Checklist for 2026
By Bright Growth Agency Editorial Team · 2026-01-21 · 8 min read
Google Business Profile changes quietly and often — new attributes appear, category options shift, and what counted as a minor guideline violation last year can trigger a suspension this year. This checklist reflects what we're actually seeing work (and fail) across client profiles as part of our Google Business Profile Optimization service heading into 2026.
Getting the Fundamentals Right
Before anything else: confirm your profile is verified through Google's current verification method for your business type, and revisit your primary and secondary categories. Category selection is one of the most underrated ranking levers — a profile categorized too broadly (e.g., "Medical Clinic" instead of a more specific dermatology-related category where available) competes against a much wider, tougher field. Attributes (wheelchair accessible, online appointments, women-led business, etc.) should be filled in completely; incomplete profiles are a quiet trust signal working against you.
Content Cadence: Posts & Photos
Google Business Profile posts function similarly to a lightweight social feed attached directly to your listing. A minimum weekly cadence keeps the profile "active" in Google's eyes and gives potential customers a reason to click through rather than bounce to a competitor's listing. Photos matter just as much: geo-tagged, recent, and ideally showing real treatment rooms, staff and (where compliant) real results — stock photography is easy to spot and does little for trust.
Review Generation & Response Strategy
Review velocity and recency both factor into local ranking, not just your overall star average. A profile with 200 reviews from three years ago ranks worse than a profile with 40 reviews, half of them from the last quarter. Build a simple, consistent request flow — a WhatsApp or email message sent shortly after a positive appointment or purchase, linking directly to your review page — and respond to every review, positive or negative, within 48 hours.
Managing Q&A Before Someone Else Does
The Q&A section on your profile is publicly editable, meaning anyone — including competitors — can post a question, and anyone can answer it if you don't first. Seed your own profile with the 5-8 questions patients or customers actually ask most (pricing ranges, walk-ins vs. appointments, insurance, parking) and answer them yourself before an outdated or inaccurate crowd-sourced answer takes root.
Common Mistakes That Trigger Suspensions
The most frequent causes we see: keyword-stuffing the business name field (e.g., adding a city or service name that isn't part of your legal business name), using a virtual office or residential address for a service-area business without proper configuration, and duplicate listings for the same location. Any of these can trigger a suspension that takes real revenue-generating visibility offline for weeks while it's contested.

Frequently Asked Questions
At minimum weekly — more frequently around promotions, new services or seasonal campaigns helps keep the profile active in Google's local ranking signals.
Keyword-stuffed business names, incorrect address configuration for service-area businesses, and duplicate listings are the most common triggers we see.
Yes — always respond professionally and promptly. A thoughtful response to a negative review is often more persuasive to future customers than the review itself.
